Apple Bread
1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup shortening, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1 teaspoon soda, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 2 cup grated or diced apples, 1/2 cup chopped nuts, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.
Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour loaf pan. Mix 1 cup sugar, shortening, eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt until smooth. Stir in apples and nuts, spread in pan. Mix 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over batter. Bake 50-60 minutes (until toothpick comes out clean). Immediately remove from pan and cool bread completely before slicing. Store lightly covered.. Bessie Peterson, Success Chapter #87
Ginger Bread
1 1/2 cups molasses, 2/3 cup shortening, 1 egg beaten, 1 cup of sour milk, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon salt, flour (enough to make it the consistency of a cake.
Directions: Mix all together in the order given and bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve hot with whipped cream or ice cream... In memory of my mother Ida Black... Mary Lou Southard, Success Chapter #87.
Homemade Biscuits
2 cups self-rising flour, 3/4 cup milk, 1/4 cup melted bacon grease (if you don't have bacon grease you can use regular grease).
Directions: Melt grease in baking pan. Before pouring melted grease out of pan roll it around in pan to coat pan. Mix ingredients together and place on a floured surface with enough flour to take out sticky out of dough. Pat down dough and cut out circles with a glass. Lay biscuits in pan and turn over to grease lightly on both side. Heat oven at 450. Cook for about 20 minutes to light golden brown. Each oven varies so start checking about 15 minutes.....
